Flemington, New Jersey
Hunterdon’s county seat: a historic Main Street, galleries and a stage on Stangl Road, and events all year.
Get to Know Flemington
Flemington has been Hunterdon’s county seat since the 1790s. Main Street runs past the 1828 Greek Revival courthouse, where the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial was held, and more than half of the borough’s parcels lie in the Flemington Historic District. A quarter mile away, Stangl Road has become a dining and entertainment street, with galleries and a stage in the old Stangl pottery factory.
Flemington Borough covers about 1.1 square miles and is surrounded by Raritan Township, a separate municipality. Properties in Raritan Township, and in parts of nearby townships such as Readington, can also have a Flemington mailing address, so check which municipality a property is in. That decides its property tax rate and the local services it receives.

Homes in Flemington
Flemington’s housing ranges from Victorian houses and smaller post-war homes from the mid-1900s to two- to four-unit houses, townhouses, and apartments.
Older buildings in the borough span Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Victorian styles. The borough’s 2022 master plan, citing 2020 Census survey data, puts about 30% of its housing structures at two to four units, and it describes Courthouse Square, the Union Hotel redevelopment on Main Street, as planned with 206 apartments and townhouses.
Flemington Borough vs. Raritan Township
Flemington Borough and Raritan Township are separate municipalities, and the township surrounds the borough. A Flemington mailing address does not mean a property is in the borough: Raritan Township’s Lenape Park, for one, has a Flemington address. Check the municipality for any property you’re considering, since it sets the tax rate and local services.
